The “funnies”

I think I’ve posted enough serious stuff on this blog recently … time for some chuckles … time for some funnies! 🙂

I remember as a kid that my brother and I would always ask our dad for the “funnies” section of the Sunday newspaper. Do you remember that? I sure loved the funnies. My brother did too. There were always two sections of the funnies in the Sunday newspaper so my brother and I got one section each and then we traded with each other when we had finished reading the section we had been given.

But before we get to a deeper discussion of the funnies here in the blog, here are a few blog housekeeping thoughts …

1. Please share this blog with all of your friends and family and co-workers and neighbors. The more the merrier. www.travelswithtowhee.com

2. If you haven’t already, please sign up to receive a very brief text-only email that will notify you each time I upload a new blog post. To do that, enter your email address and use the “subscribe” button in the upper right-hand corner of this webpage. Follow the prompts; say yes to everything. This lets you know when a new blog post has been published, and it helps me keep track of statistics for the blog. No worries, you can opt out and remove the subscription any time you’d like in the future.

3. We all love the comments that people post here right? I do and I bet you do too. Chat with me, chat with each other, tell a joke, ask a question, tell me what your favorite photo is, just say hi, etc. Obviously, I speak English, but you are more than welcome to write comments in your own language; I’ll do my best to learn and understand.

Ok, now for the “funnies”…

Here are a few of today’s digital online “funnies”. Enjoy. 🙂

Groaner #1. A tourist in Vienna is going through a graveyard and suddenly he hears music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source. He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads “Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827”. He realizes that the music is the Ninth Symphony and it is being played backwards! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backward. Curious, the two friends agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is now playing, again backward. The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the next day the word has spread and a crowd has gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then the graveyard’s caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music. “Don’t you get it?” the caretaker says incredulously. “He is decomposing.”

Groaner #2. Emmy Sue passed away so Bubba called 911. The 911 operator told Bubba that she would send someone out right away. “Where do you live?” asked the operator. Bubba replied, “At the end of Eucalyptus Drive.” The operator asked, “Can you spell that for me?” There was a long pause and finally Bubba said, “How ’bout if I drag her over to Oak Street and you pick her up there?”

Groaner #3. A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children began discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster. “No,” said another. “He’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close with this comment: “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrants.”

One of the “Mark Trail” comics …

The “funnies” are still the first thing I look at in the paper! Thanks for the jokes, I rarely comment but I do enjoy your travels and the details of the interesting places you visit.

I’m so happy that the funnies are still in the paper. 🙂 thanks Ann. You made my day letting me know the funnies are still there.

Comic strips — Remember ‘Mark Trail’? it wasn’t really comedic, but it began in the mid 40s – focused on environmental protection. I was too young to understand the concept, but I knew I loved his time spent in the wilderness. No wonder I am a tree hugger today!

    • Ann says:

I do! I remember Mark Trail. But in case anyone else doesn’t remember him, I’ve added an image of one of the Mark Trail comic strips in the blog above. A bit of Google research tells me the strip is still being created and published in numerous newspapers and books around the world. Thanks Jan. Here’s to more tree huggers!

Yep, it’s been a long time since you wrote a comment here Vern, but I’m always happy to hear from you, no matter how long it has been. If you do come to this area and want any help or info, just say the word. In the meantime, thanks for being such a stalwart reader of this blog, I really like that.

What fun. Thanks for the chuckles Ann, thanks for the memories.

  5. Ben says:

When I was a kid I grabbed the funnies as soon as the paper hit the front step. I loved Dick Tracy and Barney Google and Snuffy Smith. Man this takes me back. Thank you!

    • Ann says:

Hi Ben, thanks for the nice comment. I remember Dick Tracy … and Barney and Snuffy too. In fact, I remember Snuffy better than I remember Barney. There’s a song about “Barney Google with the goo-goo-googly eyes.” I have always wondered if today’s internet search engine “Google” was named after Barney Google.
