Deception Pass, a few more photos

This will be my last blog post for this 2024 Deception Pass State Park camping trip (but more camping trips are coming!). I’d like to share just a few photos from throughout the week here, just one or two photos from separate places throughout the week. All are fond memories for me. Thought you might enjoy them too. πŸ™‚

Above … the big white truck parked on Fidalgo Island so I could take photos looking back (south) towards Whidbey Island and at the Deception Pass Bridge.

Above, looking along both bridges of the Deception Pass bridge, total of about 1/3 of a mile, built in 1934-35 and still safe and sturdy. Click on photos to enlarge them.

Above, a view of the salt water exiting Deception Pass. As the tide goes out, the water heads west (to the right), outbound from Puget Sound. The beach over there on Whidbey is the beach where I found the alligator log, the harbor seal, and the river otters.

Above … looking west towards the Pacific Ocean from Fidalgo Island, with Whidbey on the left.

Photo above showing the larger/longer portion of the Deception Pass bridge … this photo was taken from the beach on Whidbey that’s WAY out at the point of land in the photo above this one.

A hawk … a red-tailed hawk? It stayed right there while I parked the truck on the side of the road, and while I got out of the truck to take the photo. Then it gave me a wink and flew off.

The photo above is of a community along West Beach Road, but a couple of miles south of the state park, where there is a very narrow bit of land that runs between the salt water of Puget Sound on the left and the fresh water lake on the right, much like Cranberry Lake up in the state park.

The photo below is of a community of homes right on the salt water, south of the one above. Check out the huge boulders that were brought in by barge years ago, to protect the sand from eroding and to protect the homes from the storms from the ocean. Today, all was calm and peaceful.

Above … I was looking out from that beach above, looking west towards the ocean (many miles away), when I saw these two boats/ships passing each other. I couldn’t see the name of the smaller commercial fishing vessel heading south towards the USA. The name of the large ship heading north towards Canada is “Golden Alaska“. Here’s a link to information about it.

And here below is a sweet friend who greeted me on one of my drives along some of the back roads of south Whidbey Island.

Ah, and here’s another friend below …

And then I drove past the Holly Farm (bel0w) … this farm was there when I lived here as a child, a LOT of years ago. I remember when the holly trees were first planted, those youngster trees! πŸ™‚

Today, these trees are full grown, full of holly berries and leaves, magnificent.

There are a number of different varieties of holly trees/berries grown here, many acres of them up the hill to the left, MANY acres, hundreds of trees. The two photos below show just two different varieties.

And here below is one of the largest trunks that I could see from the road. What a grand magnificent tree that is. Again, as with so many things in life, I simply stood and “listened”.

And then, back to my home, my wonderful Towhee the Trailer.

In the photo below, you can see that narrow bit of land that separates Cranberry Lake in the foreground from the ocean’s salt water just past that bit of land. In fact, if you look really closely, you can see a small power boat out on the salt water heading to the right, maybe on its way into Deception Pass, or maybe headed into the San Juan Islands. I remember cruising by here too in one or the other of my boats, such wonderful memories.

And then … the last evening of this camping trip …

Blessings everyone, always.

No eagles this trip? But that’s a nice hawk. I also liked the info about the ship, heading to Alaska! You always find great stuff and your photos are super.

What a wonderful area you’ve introduced me too! It’s such an interesting part of the country too. I now find I’m intrigued whenever you leave a comment, ’cause it means I can again visit the PNW. Take care.

Wish you could come back and visit again in person, FG. I’m honored to share. Say, you know what, I just thought of this … if there is anywhere here that you would like to see photos of, just say the word. You take care too. πŸ™‚

Furry Gnome, my wife and I just sold our motorhome, but our son is still (still!) thinking of move to the PNW area so we could drive there and visit him and see some of these amazing places that Ann shows us. What great memories you must have of seeing it.

Thanks for such beautiful photos Ann!

    • Ann says:

You are welcome for the photos, Tim. Gosh you’ve been following along, traveling along on this blog with me almost since day one. Get that son of yours out here, and then come visit. Thanks for riding along. πŸ™‚

Sure hope everyone reading here tells ALL their friends about this blog. The photos are wonderful whether you travel or camp or not. And the stories are delightful. πŸ™‚ I’m mostly stuck at home these days (not for my health but for someone else’s) and I really like the entertainment. Travel on! πŸ™‚

    • Ann says:

Ah, Eileen, I’d love it if everyone here told all their friends about this blog. Can I make you my advertising agent? πŸ™‚
I’m sorry that you’re stuck at home, but I like that you are helping someone, likely someone special to you. Do let me know if you’d like to see anything in particular here in Washington State. I have no plans yet for 2026 … I need plans!

    Delightful!
