A cozy fire

I love watching a cozy fire in the evening.

In the summer, in spring, or autumn, a cozy campfire in the evening with camping friends gathered around is exquisite. And at home, in the winter, a fire in the fireplace or the woodstove is so warm and welcoming and peaceful.

But, some resources today say we shouldn’t be burning wood. For one thing, we shouldn’t be cutting down, destroying our forests. Commercial businesses that sell firewood sometimes get their wood from forests that are endangered, or from forests that may soon be endangered. There have been so MANY forest fires here in western USA/Canada, most of them started by humans. Let’s stop adding to the destruction.

But also we shouldn’t be burning wood because of the pollution from those types of fires, whether outdoor campfires or indoor fireplaces or woodstoves. The smoke pollution causes damage to trees and to wildlife, to birds and squirrels, to bugs and lichen and the ozone, and to ourselves. Years ago, we didn’t know this mattered. But today there are so many people who are burning wood, not because they need a fire but simply for enjoyment, and that takes a toll. More and more states in the USA are banning outdoor fires including campfires, year round. And some are banning indoor fires during parts of the year depending on weather and other things.

But … I still want the ambiance of a fire. So here’s what I do … I play the video below on my computerized television in my living room when I have company. And I can run the video on my laptop inside my trailer when I’m camping. I have a little glass of wine or other beverage of choice, and just sit and relax and dream. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s lovely. Please play this video any time you feel like it and join me. (Click that lower right hand square thingy to enlarge it to full screen.) Cheers!

Well, this IS mesmerizing….but can you roast a marshmallow on it?

    • Ann says:

Dawn, you always get right to the heart of the matter, and ask the tough questions, the ones no one else will face, the deep and meaningful examination of an especially delicate subject. sigh. “Can you roast marshmallows on it?”
Ah, not so much. But there are some good recipes for S’Mores that you can cook in your home kitchen. But … nope, you won’t be dripping marshmallows off the end of a stick into this video fire, or burning the marshmallow and eating it anyway, etc. Life just isn’t the same as it used to be or should be some times. sigh. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for the great question.

  2. Sesapa says:

That’s a nice video! And a great alternative to burning real wood, but … no smell of the fire. They need to invent videos that have smell.

    • Ann says:

Sesapa, you made me look online to see if one can buy the scent of a campfire … you can! In a spray can. I might have to try that. But, sigh, no, videos can’t do smell yet. But I’d bet that, at some point in the future, there will be a way to create millions of different smells with electronic equipment. Hopefully, those smells will mostly be good ones. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Steve W says:

Yeah, but which way is the wind blowing so I don’t sit with the smoke in my face? ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Ann says:

Oh no kidding! It seems to me that whenever I sit around a campfire, the wind always shifts and blows the smoke right at me. I promise you, Steve, that this video will never blow the smoke into your face, guaranteed. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Love this!!

  5. Nebraska says:

I’ll be right over with a glass of wine! yah! ๐Ÿ™‚ Oh, wait, no, you’re in Washington State and I’m in Nebraska. Hmm, ok, I’ll be there in three days! That’s a the best video I’ve seen of a fireplace fire. Thanks.

  6. Tim in Montana says:

Ok, maybe this fire is missing the marshmallows and the smell (and the smoke) but you never have to clean out this fireplace or the ashes, you never have to clean or repair the chimney, and you never have to buy or cut already cut wood or have to cut/split wood by hand. I like this kind of fire. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Ann says:

You make an excellent point, Tim. No maintenance of this fire! And no wood splitting. I like that too. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Lori says:

Love the comments, made me laugh! And the video is wonderful, it’s very cool (hot?). ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Cindy says:

This video is now a “favorite”, thank you. cheers!

I’m still enjoying real campfires over here. When I have one going in the living room it just makes the whole house feel a better warmer…..(;+)……………..
I have to have one in my shop to keep my Winnebago happy. “Lucy” likes to be happy.

    • Ann says:

Oh gosh yes there’s nothing like a real fireplace fire at home is there? I have a woodstove at home and almost look forward to the electricity going off so I can have a fire in the woodstove. It’s so cozy and smells so nice.
“Lucy” is a great name for a Winnebago … a long, long trailer perhaps? Yep, keep her happy. ๐Ÿ™‚
